Seminar cyber security in the maritime industry
What do you know about maritime cyber security?
Are you interested in cyber security in the maritime industry and the vision of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), the Nederlandse Zeebevrachters Sociëteit (NZS) and the Rotterdam Maritime Services Community (RMSC) on this topic? Join the seminar ‘Cyber security and the maritime industry’ on September 20 in Rotterdam.
Just like in other industries, cyber security is becoming increasingly important for maritime organisations and companies. The complexity and risks deriving from digitisation make cyber security a comprehensive topic. Because of the lack of clear definitions for maritime related cyber challenges it is difficult to come up with universal solutions for this industry.
International Maritime Organization
The Maritime Safety Committee, that deals with maritime safety and security which fall under the scope of the IMO adopted their Maritime Cyber Risk Management in Safety Management Systems – MSC.428(98) resolution during the 98th meeting on June 16, 2017. Unfortunately this resolution does not provide solace. The resolution encourages companies to address cyber risks. These have to be incorporate into the company’s Document of Compliance (DOC) no later then January first 2021. However the resolution does not provide clear guidelines.
Insights and awareness
Cyber security can only start after awareness about the importance of it. After gaining awareness thorough analyses and recommendations form the foundation on how companies should proceed with the implementation of cyber security measures. Because of the complexity of maritime cyber security ICS, NZS and the RMSC decided to organise a joint seminar to raise awareness for this topic in the Dutch maritime industry.
During the seminar on September 20 Eric Thorr Klopper – senior security analyst – of industry frontrunner Armada Maritime (London, Piraeus) will share his views. For this presentation he partnered up with leading cyber security company : Cyber1. In addition Dutch P&I will elaborate on how the P&I cover will respond to a cyber incident. Jeroen van der Veer – Area Business Development Manager at DNV GL Maritime – will also be speaking at the event.
