Green Award Foundation

The Green Award Foundation was established in 1994. Green Award is a global, independent, not-for-profit quality assurance organisation that works by certifying ship managers and vessels that go beyond the industry standards in terms of safety, quality and environmental performance.

The scheme brings together ship managers, who are willing to improve safety and environmental performance of their vessels, and ports or private companies in the maritime sector, which are willing to support the vessels that go beyond international conventions and legislation in terms of ship lay-out and equipment, quality of operations and management with the ultimate goal to protecting the environment.

Why Green Award?

What makes Green Award stand out from other environmental initiatives is its comprehensive approach to the requirements that have to be met by ships in order to obtain the certificate. Quality, safety and environmental protection are the 3 main pillars of the Green Award requirements which cover items related to exhaust emissions, hazardous materials, human factor, vessel’s maintenance, operations and management amongst other aspects.

Cooperation with the industry

The foundation works closely with maritime authorities and classification societies, provides data to Equasis (the database containing safety-related information on the world’s merchant fleet) and carries out ESI (Environmental Ship Index) verification checks for IAPH. Solid experience built by Green Award through almost 25 years of operation helps the scheme to increase environmental awareness and facilitate implementation of the best practices. Representatives of INTERTANKO, INTERCARGO, SIGTTO, Chemical Distribution Institute, US Coast Guard, IACS, OCIMF, ClassNK, the Nautical Institute and other industry related organisations and ports are on the Board and the Committee of the Green Award Foundation.
