3rd Cyber Security seminar
In February 2020, during the previous maritime cyber security seminar, the participants were asked the question: ‘What do you know about maritime cyber security?’ It appeared that practical knowledge of cyber security in the maritime and logistics playing field was very limited and although awareness today is at a higher level than in 2020, it is still far from where it should be.
During that seminar, we have astonishingly established that exposure is huge and financial and operational risks are extremely high. The risks are actually increasing by the day. The maritime industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the hacking world.
As an example, in January 2021 one of the leading Dutch shipowners was hacked and the use of computers and communication ceased completely, also with the ships out at sea. The owner was associated with an expert company on maritime cyber security that managed to take back control of the systems and bring communication back within 48 hours. No ransom was paid. Better protection would have helped to avoid the hack in the first place.
It is a necessity
It is stated it before: it is not anymore whether you are interested in cyber security, it is a necessity to learn how to deal with your exposures. IMO has published international guidelines on cyber security, but they are not yet really dealing with the problem how to arrange cyber security protection for the maritime and logistics industry. IMO guidelines require shipowners to survey the status of their security ashore and on board their ships. It is easy to become compliant, but it does not provide any protection. This leaves room for unchartered actions on how to deal with cyber security. Finding integrated solutions, regarding classification regulations, the connection between the OT and IT systems for ship owners and on board vessels are the main elements for concern.
These are the topics of the 3rd joint seminar of the NZS, RMSC, ICS and Erasmus University.
Finding the right partner
For companies working in the maritime field it is not easy to find the right partner for the required protection level. Especially the ships seem to be ignored, and that means increased risks.
During the seminar experienced international maritime cyber security experts will share their vision. The seminar will kick off with a key note of Vivian van der Kuil, PhD candidate at the Erasmus School of Law and experienced maritime lawyer. Of course there will be more than enough room for interaction with the public.
Vivian van der Kuil will focus on the legal perspective of the cyber security. She specifically address the role of classification societies but she will also look at the insurance side and BIMCO clauses dealing with cyber security.
Her speech will be followed by presentations from Varuna Maritime Services, focusing on the connection between OT and IT, Cyber.Dockside.ai, using the yachting sector as an example to show how the maritime world should be able to learn from its specific needs, but maybe doesn’t get it right all the time, and Armada/WT Group on the necessities of proper assessments.
Joining of the 3rd seminar ‘Practicalities of cyber security in the maritime industry’ is a must for those involved in and related to the maritime and logistics field.
