Singaporean students in Rotterdam for Erasmus UPT’s Study Abroad Programme

21 July 2019/in News

RMSC members share their daily practice with students from Singapore

This fall, Erasmus Center for Urban, Port and Transport Economics (UPT) will provide a programme for 81 bachelor students from Singapore. The Maritime Studies students from Nanyang Technological University will follow the tailor-made Study Abroad Programme and get acquainted with Rotterdam and The Netherlands.

Academic Director Wouter Jacobs explains: “We will introduce these future professionals of the Singaporean maritime sector to the port city of Rotterdam, which fits in perfectly with the vision of Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe: Rotterdam as a place to grow and develop talent. Additionally, the students will familiarize themselves with the Rotterdam mentality of getting things done, a mindset which belongs to our beautiful port. “

Strong bilateral relationship

The port cities of Rotterdam and Singapore have built a strong relationship, based upon long standing cooperation. It was therefore logical for Jacobs to design an academic programme for the Singaporean students. “The Nanyang Technological University is a leading university. We have many similarities. Both universities are part of a port city, both offer specific academic educational programmes in the field of port and port management. It is great to see that with this collaboration we are creating a win-win for the students.”

RMSC members open their doors

For the occasion, companies affiliated with the Rotterdam Maritime Services Community are opening their doors for the students. They will immerse the Singaporean students in their daily practice and in this way enrich theory with practical knowledge. Jacobs: “That makes this Study Abroad Programme so attractive. In-depth expertise from the industry combined with insights and knowledge from Erasmus University Rotterdam.”

Of the 81 students, 72 will attend the courses in Rotterdam. Starting from September until December 2019 they will be taking the following courses: Ship Ownership, Ship Management, International Maritime Law, Marine Insurance and Intensive Seminar Disruptive Scenarios. The nine remaining students will follow four out of five courses from their home university in Singapore.

Jacobs: “As a university and as Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe we continuously strengthen our international relations with other port cities in the world through programmes such as these. And what could be better than training young talent. So that the future of ports worldwide is in good hands.”
