In March representatives of the sector gathered at a meeting organised by Smash! and IVR about insurances and the opportunities for autonomous shipping.
A presentation about the possibilities by Damen Naval and the challenges and possibilities to insure autonomous vessels by SAA and MS Amlin gave room for discussion between the sector.
For now, technically, more and more is possible, but legally it is not allowed to have a complete autonomous vessel sailing in The Netherlands. Different pilots are taking place and the insurance companies are willing to cooperate, on a case-to-case basis.
If was interesting to discuss that the human factor is a factor of importance in incidents, while there is a hesitance when the sector is talking about autonomous shipping. The unknown risks are important and still to be discusses.
Both national and international this is now being researched and with sessions like these, the sector can exchange ideas and progress. RMSC was happy to participate and looking forward to the next session!
