Recap – Community Lunch
On 28 October, the Rotterdam Maritime Services Community (RMSC) brought together maritime professionals at the VNAB Ontmoetingscentrum for an insightful Community Lunch on dispute resolution in the shipping industry.
Why do maritime parties opt for arbitration… or avoid it? This central question set the stage for an engaging discussion about the legal, commercial and insurance perspectives on resolving maritime disputes.
Our speakers, Kristel de Jong (MSIG Specialty) and Niels van der Noll (UNUM arbitration & mediation), explored the advantages and challenges of arbitration, mediation, court proceedings and negotiation.
Using practical scenarios, including a shipowner facing USD 1.5 million in unpaid freight, the session highlighted the difficult decisions maritime parties face when disputes arise. Should they initiate arbitration, pursue negotiations or seek a settlement? And how do contractual arrangements, commercial relationships, costs and insurance considerations influence these choices?
A big thank you to Kristel and Niels for sharing their expertise, and to everyone who joined us for another valuable RMSC Community Lunch.
