Young RMSC event: Ship finance business case – structure a financing deal

27 October 2020/in

Date/Time: October 27 | 09:00 - 12:00

As part of the programme Maritime Studies of the Nanyang Technical University, 80 Singaporean students follow a four months course at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. RMSC was asked to fill parts of the program.  Young RMSC members are invited to participate and interact with the Singaporean students.

On October 27, you have the opportunity to learn more about a real life ship finance case (organised by Young RMSC), how to structure such a ship finance deal and talk directly with professionals from the industry. Considering the Covid-19 restrictions, the event has been transformed into a webinar but nonetheless we have a very interactive session planned where you have the opportunity to ask questions and collaborate with other attendants.

The webinar will be moderated by Azimjon Rakhimov and Thomas van Oorschot both working for NIBC Bank and active in the ship finance market.

Why Ship Finance?

Around 85% of all trade is seaborne with more than 9,000 different shipping companies worldwide. Shipowners often request a long term loan for the acquisition of vessels. During the negotiations of providing a long term loan, banks are in close contact with the shipowner to discuss / negotiate a financing deal which suits both the bank’s risk appetite and meets the client’s requirements. This is often a process which needs some careful analysis of the vessels, the market, and the financials of the company. This business case aims to show you and teach you about the key aspects which need to be considered. Hence the aim of the business case is to structure a financing that supports the shipowner to make the vessel acquisition. You will create a financing package that you can sell externally (the shipowner) and internally.

Key Topics:

During the webinar the speakers will first elaborate on specific topics and explain the case. This will be followed by modelling and answering questions. Following the more serious part of the hour event, there is an hour left to network (via Zoom), to reflect on the questions and to have a ‘pub’quiz. Topics:

  • Banking
  • Modelling
  • Senior debt
  • Leverage
  • Market dynamics
  • Type of vessels
  • Vessel acquisitions
