Five questions for Kamil Ergin, Exen Global
Who are you and what is your job?
My name is Kamil Ergin, and I am the Marketing and Business Development Manager at Exen Global BV. Our company specializes in contracted and spot chartering services for the maritime transportation of dry bulk, bagged, breakbulk, and project cargoes. Beyond this, we provide commercial and technical vessel management, agency services, maritime investment consultancy, and the sale and purchase of vessels and related services through our dedicated teams.
In my role, I combine strategic insights with hands-on ship management expertise to drive business growth. Over the past 20 years, I’ve built a career connecting ideas, people, and opportunities across global sectors. My journey in the Dutch shipping industry began after leading ventures in Brazil, where I discovered my passion for maritime innovation. Today, I focus on forging strong partnerships, unlocking new market potential, and navigating the ever-evolving challenges of the maritime world.
What does a typical day for you look like?
Each day in my role is dynamic and unique. I start by reviewing my calendar to prioritize meetings and commitments. Before attending any event or connecting with industry professionals, I always ask myself how I can add value and foster collaboration. Throughout the day, I’m engaged in analytical thinking, finding connections between opportunities, responding to messages and emails, and holding discussions that pave the way for innovation and growth.
It’s far from routine or predictable—and that’s what makes it exciting. I thrive on the social aspect of this industry, surrounded by inspiring and elegant professionals. Coffee is a staple of my day, as are meaningful conversations that often lead to long-term partnerships.
What was the best advice (workwise) someone gave you?
“Renew your ship, for the sea is deep. Take provisions in full, for the journey is long. Lighten your load, for the ascent is steep. And be sincere in your actions, for everything you do reflects the intentions of your heart.”
These words have been a guiding compass in my personal and professional development. They remind me to invest in continuous improvement, whether in my skills, relationships, or tools. Success is about caring for yourself, others, and the resources at your disposal. At its core, our work serves people, so respecting life, nature, and all the elements that contribute to our journey is essential.
How could you be of help to others in the industry or the RMSC?
I see my role as a connector of ideas and people, creating opportunities for growth. One of my key ambitions is to strengthen ties between the Turkish and Dutch shipping communities. I’m naturally social and enjoy building relationships, whether through formal events or over a cup of coffee.
As an RMSC member, I’m eager to participate in initiatives that bring value to the maritime sector. Whether through networking, sharing insights, or facilitating collaborations, I’m always willing to help and be part of organizations that drive positive change.
And lastly: what’s in the news which relates directly to your profession?
The maritime industry is influenced by several key factors in the news, including political and economic developments, new shipbuilding projects, and the movement of cargoes across global markets. Staying informed on these topics helps me anticipate changes, adapt strategies, and find opportunities to create value for our clients and partners.
