Young RMSC – an interesting year
2020 has been an interesting year, whereby we changed to a digital environment. Young RMSC has adapted to the digital world as well and stayed hereby connected. Young – RMSC tries to be the voice of all young members active in the maritime business services industry. The younger generation always have different views on the industry, whereby we try to work on topics within the services industry like ESG challenges, innovation and social responsibilities. Hopefully 2021 will be a year full of events whereby we can meet in person and whereby we can enlarge our network.
Young-RMSC organized two events and we would like to provide some food for thought:
Talented young professionals and the maritime industry
The competitiveness of the maritime industry is partially dependent on how well the industry is able to attract and retain talent. While the industry looks to the next generation to come up with ideas and solutions to solve challenges that are being faced, it is up to today’s leaders to identify, guide, and bring through the next generation. Would be great to discuss this further between both Young and more Senior RMSC members. The webinar was organised in cooperation by Young RMSC, YoungShip Rotterdam, Jong Havenvereniging, and Young NMT
Case study UPT
As part of a programme of Erasmus UPT Young RMSC was asked to organize a case study fill parts of the programne. Young RMSC members were invited to participate and interact with the Singaporean students. On October 27, we organized a case study whereby you could learn more about a real life ship finance case, how to structure such a ship finance deal and talk directly with professionals from the industry. Considering the Covid-19 restrictions, the event was transformed into a webinar but nonetheless we had a very interactive session. The webinar was moderated by Azimjon Rakhimov and myself both working for NIBC Bank and active in the ship finance market.
Young Maritime Board
Furthermore, the city of Rotterdam launched the Young Maritime Board in 2020. The board consists of representatives of various networking initiatives for maritime young professionals in the Rotterdam region, whereby I represent Young RMSC. Just like the Rotterdam Maritime Board the Young Maritime Board acts as an independent advisory body to the municipality of Rotterdam, the Drecht Cities and Province Zuid-Holland. The Young Maritime Board identifies relevant opportunities and threats from the perspective of young professionals. In addition the board focuses on connecting and strengthening the networking initiates for young maritime professionals in the Rotterdam region. During the first deep dive, the board discussed opportunities to attract and retain talent for the regional maritime cluster.
Hopefully we can see each other on short notice and organize some fruitful events.
Best regards, Thomas van Oorschot
